Gouda has a wine bar on the Markt. More and more people know this, because "high wine Gouda" and "wine bar Gouda" are among the most common searches that bring visitors to our site. Hence this guide: what a high wine is, how it works at Gouds Glas, and what to do if you would rather drink beer.
What a high wine is
A high wine is the wine version of a high tea. Instead of tea, you taste a series of wines, each with a bite to match: something savoury from the kitchen, a piece of cheese, something sweet at the end. The format is relaxed and convivial, it lasts about two hours, and the moment is late afternoon or early evening. You sit at one table and the wines come in sequence, each with a short introduction.
The wine bar at Gouds Glas
Our wine bar is a separate part of the restaurant, with its own atmosphere and an extensive wine list. It is the same space where we host meetings and where wedding couples hold their ceremony, and in the evening it is the place for a good glass. House wine is served from 5.50 euros a glass, and the list ranges from accessible to special, with wine suggestions alongside the dishes on the dinner menu.
The high wine as a package
The high wine is booked as a package on request. You give us the date, number of people and occasion, we put together the series of wines and bites and agree it with you in advance. Vegetarian is always possible, allergies should be passed on beforehand. Popular with groups of friends, hen parties, birthdays and teams who want drinks with a bit more substance.
Want to request a high wine? Email your date, the number of people and the occasion to [email protected] and we will make you a proposal.
See the group experiences →Prefer beer: high beer and the bartender's beer tasting
For beer lovers there is good news twice over. At the bar, the bartender serves a beer tasting of four beers with four bitterballen (Dutch fried snacks) for 16 euros, no booking required. So just pull up a stool, even as a pair. For groups of 30 or more there is the Beer Tasting & Cheese package, in which beers and Gouda cheeses are tasted together. The menu lists local beers from 4.50 euros, and there are alcohol-free beers and virgin cocktails for those who are not drinking.
For larger groups: Cheese & Wine Tasting
From 30 people, the high wine becomes a Cheese & Wine Tasting: four Gouda cheeses and four wines in sixty minutes, led by Joost Zekveld. A fixed part of many company outings in Gouda.
How to book
- High wine (package): on request via [email protected], with date, number of people and occasion.
- Bartender's beer tasting: at the bar, no booking required.
