Gouda and cheese belong together, and yet most visitors never taste more than a cube at the cheese market. The Cheese & Wine Tasting at Gouds Glas does things differently: four Gouda cheeses, four wines and an hour of stories from Joost Zekveld, owner of Gouds Glas and host of the tasting. Here is how it unfolds, who it is for and how to book.
How the tasting unfolds
You sit with your group at the table, in the wine bar or the restaurant. Joost opens with the story of Gouda cheese: where it comes from, what sets young apart from aged and why the cheese market has been held for centuries on the square right outside the door. Then the cheeses go round, each time with the wine that goes with it. Four rounds, sixty minutes, with room for questions and a lively debate about which pairing wins.
About Joost Zekveld
Joost is an experienced hospitality entrepreneur in Gouda and opened Gouds Glas together with Jantine Zekveld. He leads the Cheese & Wine Tasting himself. That is no small detail: the tasting runs on the story, and nobody tells it better than the owner who watches the cheese market from his terrace every week.
Who it is for
- Company outings and team days: an hour in which everyone gets a word in without it turning into a game. Read our six programmes for a company outing in Gouda.
- Family days and anniversaries: three generations at one table, with cheese as the topic of conversation.
- Client events: a programme with substance that works even without speeches.
- Groups of friends and hen and stag parties from 30 people.

See the group experiences →Beer Tasting & Cheese as an alternative
Prefer beer? The Beer Tasting & Cheese experience combines beers with Gouda cheeses, in the same format and also from 30 people. For smaller parties there is the bartender's beer tasting at the bar: four beers with four bitterballen (Dutch fried snacks) for 16 euros, no booking needed.
Combining with lunch or dinner
The tasting is a natural start or centrepiece of a day. Many groups plan it after a city walk and before a group dinner with shared dining from 30 euros per person. On Thursdays in season it fits perfectly after a morning at the cheese market.
Smaller group?
Below 30 people the Cheese & Wine Tasting cannot be booked, but the same combination of wine and bites can: as a high wine on request, or simply with a cheese board of Gouda cheeses and a glass from the menu at the bar.
Booking
Email the date, number of people and occasion to [email protected]. You will receive a proposal with the tasting and, if you wish, lunch, dinner or drinks around it. Price on request.
