Dit is het verhaal achter de ramen en hoe zij Gouds Glas inspireerden. Als je over de Markt in Gouda loopt en omhoogkijkt, zie je de torens van de Sint-Janskerk boven de daken uitsteken. De kerk heeft de stad al vijf eeuwen bewaakt. Maar haar ware rijkdom zit van binnen: 72 glas-in-loodramen die behoren tot het mooiste wat de mensheid ooit heeft gemaakt van glas, lood en licht. ## De langste kerk van Nederland De Sint-Janskerk meet 123 meter van voor naar achter, daarmee de langste kerk van Nederland. Ze werd gebouwd in de 15e en 16e eeuw op de plek van een eerdere romaanse kerk die in 1361 afbrandde. De huidige gotische kerk groeide over decennia uit tot het imposante bouwwerk dat bezoekers vandaag nog steeds de adem beneemt. Maar het zijn niet de stenen muren die de Sint-Janskerk wereldberoemd maken. Het zijn de ramen. ## 72 ramen, eeuwen aan verhalen Tussen 1555 en 1603 werden de 72 glas-in-loodramen geplaatst. De vroegste ramen, de zogeheten Glazen van Gouda, werden geschonken door koningen, edellieden en kerkelijke hoogwaardigheidsbekleders uit heel Europa. Elk raam vertelt een eigen verhaal: bijbelse taferelen, historische gebeurtenissen en portretten van de schenkers zelf. De ramen zijn ontworpen door de gebroeders Dirck en Wouter Crabeth, twee Goudse meesters wier werk wordt gezien als het hoogtepunt van de Nederlandse glasschilderkunst. Hun techniek, het werken met dikke transparante glaslagen in combinatie met fijn geschilderde details, was in die tijd revolutionair en is tot op de dag van vandaag ongekend. ## De Reformatie en een uniek wonder In 1572, tijdens de Reformatie, werden kerken door heel Nederland geplunderd. Altaarschilderijen werden vernietigd, beelden stukgeslagen, kostbaarheden meegenomen. De Sint-Janskerk onderging hetzelfde lot, maar de ramen bleven gespaard. Waarom? Omdat de ramen geen religieuze beelden konden worden verwijderd zonder de kerk te verwoesten. Het glas bleef, en daarmee overleefden de glazen de eeuwen. Dat is het wonder van de Goudse glazen: ze zijn origineel. Niet gerestaureerd tot onherkenbaarheid, niet verplaatst naar een museum. Ze hangen nog altijd op de plek waarvoor ze zijn gemaakt, in het licht dat er altijd al doorheen heeft gevallen. De Sint-Janskerk bezoeken? Plan er een lunch of diner bij Gouds Glas bij in. De oprichters van het restaurant wilden een plek creëren die aansluit bij de sfeer van de kerk aan de overkant van de Markt: warm, kleurrijk, vol licht en met een gevoel van geschiedenis. Een grand café waar de glas-in-loodtraditie van Gouda voelbaar is, zonder dat het zwaar of museaal wordt. Die filosofie zie je terug in de boogvormen die de basis zijn van het interieur, in de goudtinten die overal terugkomen, en in de manier waarop wij koken: seizoensgebonden, eerlijk en met oog voor detail. De historische kaasmarkt bijwonen Van april tot en met augustus is er elke donderdagochtend de Goudse Kaasmarkt op de Markt (10:00–12:30). Fietsen naar de Reeuwijkse Plassen Op slechts 5 kilometer van het centrum liggen de Reeuwijkse Plassen, een prachtig recreatiegebied met meren, stranden en uitgestrekte fietsroutes. Gouda is een compacte stad: alles wat je wilt zien ligt op loopafstand van de Markt. Dat betekent ook dat je de auto het beste aan de rand van de binnenstad laat staan. In de smalle straten rond de Markt is nauwelijks plek, aan de centrumring parkeer je het voordeligst. Dit zijn alle opties, van garage tot P+R, en de tips die wij onze gasten geven. ## De parkeergarages Parkeergarage Nieuwe Markt (Q-Park), Conventstraat 7-13. De garage die het dichtst bij de Markt ligt. Je loopt in een paar minuten naar het stadhuis, de Waag en Gouds Glas. Op zaterdagen en tijdens evenementen is dit ook de garage die als eerste vol staat. Parkeergarage Bolwerk (Q-Park), Sint Mariewal 3. Aan de westkant van het centrum, een rustige wandeling door de binnenstad verwijderd van de Markt. Een goed alternatief als Nieuwe Markt vol is. ## Parkeerterreinen rond het centrum - Klein Amerika, Klein Amerika 30. Groot terrein aan de centrumring, ook geschikt voor campers tot 6 meter. Overnachten is niet toegestaan. - Schouwburgplein, Boelekade 67. Bij de Goudse Schouwburg, aan de noordkant van het centrum. - Vossenburchkade, Vossenburchkade 50. Aan de rand van de binnenstad, op loopafstand van de Markt. - Groenheuvel, Tobbepad 4. Geschikt voor alle campers; overnachten is niet toegestaan. ## P+R bij het station Aan de Burgemeester Jamessingel 1, direct bij station Gouda, ligt het P+R-terrein. Vanaf het station loop je in ongeveer vijf minuten via de Kleiweg naar de Markt. Handig als je de drukte rond het centrum wilt vermijden of als je een deel van je gezelschap met de trein laat komen. ## Tarieven en betalen De tarieven verschillen per locatie en veranderen regelmatig. We noemen ze hier daarom bewust niet. De actuele tarieven, openingstijden en het aantal vrije plekken vind je op gouda.parkeerservice.nl. Vuistregel: hoe verder van de Markt, hoe voordeliger. Geparkeerd? Dan is het nog een paar minuten lopen naar Markt 40. Reserveer je tafel, dan staat die klaar als je aankomt. Reserveer een tafel → ## Tips voor drukke dagen - Kaasmarkt-donderdag (april tot en met augustus, 10:00 tot 12:30): kom voor 10:00 of kies het P+R-terrein bij het station. Lees ook onze gids over de kaasmarkt. - Zaterdagen: Nieuwe Markt staat als eerste vol; Klein Amerika en Bolwerk hebben vaker plek. - Gouda bij Kaarslicht (vrijdag 11 december 2026): de binnenstad staat die avond vol en de garages lopen vroeg vol. Kom met de trein of de fiets. - Avonduren: voor een diner is er doorgaans ruim plek in alle garages. ## Met de trein of de fiets Station Gouda heeft directe verbindingen met Rotterdam, Utrecht en Den Haag (ongeveer twintig minuten) en Amsterdam (ongeveer vijftig minuten). Het station ligt op vijf minuten lopen van het centrum. Kom je op de fiets, dan stal je die in de fietsenstalling Nieuwe Markt: 700 plekken, 70 laadpunten voor e-bikes, de eerste 24 uur gratis en daarna 1,25 euro per dag. ## Vanaf je parkeerplek naar Gouds Glas Gouds Glas zit aan Markt 40, direct naast het stadhuis. Vanuit parkeergarage Nieuwe Markt ben je er in een paar minuten, vanuit de andere garages en terreinen in hooguit tien minuten lopen door de binnenstad. Boeren rijden hun kazen per paard en wagen het plein op, kaashandelaren onderhandelen met handjeklap en de kaasmeisjes delen stukjes uit. De Goudse kaasmarkt is een van de weinige plekken waar je deze traditie nog ziet. Gouds Glas zit aan hetzelfde plein, dus wij kijken er elke week op uit. De boeren leveren hun kazen aan, de handelaren keuren ze en onderhandelen over de prijs met het klassieke handjeklap: elke klap is een bod, de laatste klap is de koop. Daarna worden de kazen naar de Waag gebracht en gewogen op de originele weegschaal. Rondom het schouwspel staan kramen met streekproducten en een ambachtenmarkt, en in de zomermaanden is er een kinderkaasmarkt waar kinderen zelf aan de slag mogen. ## De Waag en het stadhuis De Waag uit 1668, ontworpen door Pieter Post, is het decor van het wegen. Kijk omhoog naar het reliëf boven de ingang: daar wordt al ruim drie eeuwen kaas gewogen. Midden op het plein staat het gotische stadhuis uit 1450, het oudste vrijstaande stadhuis van Nederland. De vroege avond op een doordeweekse dag is het geheim van de Gouwenaars: rustig, warm licht op de gevels en een glas rosé voordat het diner begint. ## Met kinderen op het terras Kinderen zijn welkom. Op de lunch- en dinerkaart staan kindergerechten, bij het diner inclusief een kinderijsje en een verrassing. De Markt biedt ruimte om even te bewegen tussen de gangen door. ## Reserveren voor het terras Terrasweer laat zich niet reserveren, een tafel wel. Daarna is het nog een paar minuten lopen naar het terras. ### Veelgestelde vragen **Kan ik een tafel op het terras reserveren?** Reserveer een tafel online of telefonisch en vermeld dat je graag buiten zit. Als het weer het toelaat houden we daar rekening mee; anders zit je binnen onder de glas-in-loodramen. **Tot hoe laat is het terras open?** Zolang het weer het toelaat, binnen onze openingstijden: maandag tot 22:00, dinsdag en woensdag tot 23:00, donderdag tot en met zaterdag tot 00:00. Dit artikel legt uit hoe het werkt met de gemeente, welke locaties er in het centrum zijn en waar je op moet letten als je kiest. De vraag waar je gaat trouwen valt meestal uiteen in drie losse vragen: waar geven jullie elkaar het ja-woord, waar eten jullie met de gasten, en waar wordt er gefeest. In een grote stad zijn dat vaak drie adressen en een busje ertussen. In Gouda hoeft dat niet. ## Hoe trouwen in Gouda formeel werkt Een huwelijk of geregistreerd partnerschap sluit je in Nederland op een locatie die door de gemeente is aangewezen als officiële trouwlocatie. De gemeente Gouda heeft naast het stadhuis een aantal locaties in de stad aangewezen. De ambtenaar van de burgerlijke stand komt dan naar die locatie toe; je hoeft dus niet eerst naar het gemeentehuis en daarna naar je feest. Dat scheelt in de praktijk enorm: geen verplaatsing tussen ceremonie en receptie, geen gasten die tussendoor kwijtraken, en geen strak tijdsblok waar de hele dag omheen gebouwd moet worden. De aangifte van je voorgenomen huwelijk doe je bij de gemeente Gouda, uiterlijk twee weken en maximaal een jaar voor de trouwdatum. Als decor voor foto's ongeëvenaard. - Locaties aan het water, rond de Oosthaven en de Museumhaven, rustiger en intiemer. - Restaurants en eventlocaties aan de Markt, waar ceremonie, diner en feest op één adres kunnen. ## Trouwen bij Gouds Glas Wij zijn door de gemeente Gouda officieel aangewezen als trouwlocatie. De ceremonie vindt plaats in onze wijnbar: afgesloten en intiem, onder de Goudse glazen. De ambtenaar komt naar ons toe. Daarna ontvangen we jullie als kersvers getrouwd stel met champagne, en bakt onze pâtissier een bruidstaart op maat, smaak, vorm en lagen kiezen jullie zelf. Voor de gasten stellen we een lunch of meergangendiner samen, van shared dining tot een verfijnd dineerprogramma, met vegetarische en allergieopties. Voor de feestavond is het hele restaurant exclusief af te huren, tot 200 gasten. Eindtijden verschillen per locatie en per dag van de week. - Exclusiviteit, is de locatie die dag alleen van jullie, of lopen er andere gasten rond? - Eén aanspreekpunt of losse leveranciers? Het scheelt maanden voorbereiding. - Bereikbaarheid voor gasten, parkeren, openbaar vervoer en overnachtingsmogelijkheden op loopafstand. ## Praktisch voor jullie gasten Gouda Centraal ligt op zeven minuten lopen van de Markt, met directe treinen vanuit Utrecht, Den Haag, Rotterdam en Amsterdam. Je hoeft niets te reserveren: loop binnen, pak een plek op het terras of aan de bar en bestel. Het is de plek waar Gouda de werkweek afsluit, van kantoren uit de binnenstad tot teams die met de trein uit Rotterdam of Utrecht komen. Reserveer een tafel → ## Borrelen met een groep Een verjaardag, een afdelingsborrel, een reünie of een afscheid: voor groepen van 10 tot 200 gasten stellen we borrelpakketten op maat samen. Je krijgt een eigen bar, hapjes uit onze keuken en een plek die bij de groep past: het terras, de brasserie, het restaurant, de wijnbar of de vide. De prijs hangt af van je wensen; je ontvangt vooraf een helder voorstel. Vanaf 17:00 serveren we de dinerkaart, en voor groepen vanaf 10 personen is er shared dining of een gangenmenu vanaf 30 euro per persoon. Zo wordt een borrel een avond, zonder dat iemand hoeft te verkassen. ## Praktisch We zijn open van maandag tot en met zaterdag: maandag tot 22:00, dinsdag en woensdag tot 23:00, donderdag tot en met zaterdag tot 00:00. Grachtentocht en groepsdiner In het seizoen varen rondvaartboten door de Goudse grachten. Een uur op het water, daarna aan tafel bij Gouds Glas voor shared dining of een gangenmenu vanaf 30 euro per persoon, met gerechten uit de houtskooloven en wijntips bij elk gerecht. Het avondprogramma voor teams die goed willen eten. ## 6. Bedrijfsfeest met food- en drinkstations Voor het hele bedrijf, van 10 tot 200 gasten: een feest met food- en drinkstations vanaf 15 euro per persoon, een eigen bar en de ruimte van het hele pand als je exclusief afhuurt. Een directieoverleg van tien zit aan één tafel in de wijnbar; een kwartaalbijeenkomst van tachtig gebruikt het restaurant met de wijnbar als break-outruimte. Voor bedrijfsevents tot 200 gasten huur je het hele pand exclusief af, inclusief terras, brasserie, restaurant, wijnbar en vide. ## Bereikbaarheid Station Gouda heeft directe treinen naar Rotterdam, Utrecht en Den Haag (ongeveer twintig minuten) en Amsterdam (ongeveer vijftig minuten). Een wijnbar is iets anders: daar is de wijn het uitgangspunt en niet het bijgerecht. It was built in the 15th and 16th centuries on the site of an earlier Romanesque church that burned down in 1361. Over the decades, the present Gothic church grew into the imposing building that still takes visitors' breath away today. But it is not the stone walls that make St John's world famous. It is the windows. ## 72 windows, centuries of stories The 72 stained-glass windows were installed between 1555 and 1603. The earliest windows, known as the Gouda Windows (Goudse Glazen), were donated by kings, nobles and church dignitaries from all over Europe. The city centre is small enough to cross in a quarter of an hour, so distance is rarely the problem. The difference lies in atmosphere, pace and view. The Markt: the view you come for The Markt is the largest market square in the Netherlands and the beating heart of the city. In the middle of the square stands the Gothic town hall from 1450, the oldest free-standing town hall in the country. The terraces line the square. You sit with a view of the town hall, on Thursday mornings in July and August you look out over the historic cheese market, and St John's Church (Sint-Janskerk) is just around the corner. Lange Groenendaal and Achter de Kerk: the narrow streets Behind St John's lies the network of narrow shopping streets where Gouda is at its most Gouda: artisan bakers, small shops, now and then a lunchroom with four tables. This is where you pick up a sandwich and a coffee, not where you have a long lunch with wine. Good for: a short break while shopping, or if there are two of you and you have no booking. ## 3. Towards the water: Oosthaven and the Museum Harbour Walk from the Markt towards Museum Gouda on the Oosthaven and you reach the quietest part of the city centre. The water, the canal houses, little through traffic. If you want to combine a walk with lunch, this is the most beautiful route. Note: the choice here is more limited and more spread out. On Mondays some places are closed. ## 4. Around the station Gouda Centraal is a few minutes' walk from the Markt.
